Alice W. (Simmons) Rhoads, 98, of Barto, wife of the late John R. Rhoads, passed away on Saturday at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center. Born in Salford Township, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Mary (Wagner) Simmons and the late David Simmons.
She had been employed for many years as a seamstress at the former Eberly & Stoudt clothing manufacturing company in Obelisk, and later on by the Collegeville Flag Company. Alice was a long time member of the New Hanover Lutheran Church in Gilbertsville and was the oldest member of the church’s congregation. She had also served on the Altar Guild at church for many years and helped make candy for the annual fundraising event at the church. Alice was a member of A.A.R.P., and she enjoyed playing cards and word search.
Alice is survived by her son; Charles D. Rhoads, husband of Lois, of Barto, two grandchildren; C. David Rhoads, Jr., husband of Lori, of Barto, Mary Alice Mack, wife of James, of Pennsburg, three great-grandchildren; Kristy Gress, wife of Greg, AnnMarie Mack & Cynthia Mack, three great-great-grandchildren; Kasey, Morgan, and Hailey Gress. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her siblings; Mary Benfield, Elmer Simmons, Emma Schultz, Alvin Simmons, Fietta Moyer, David Simmons, and John Simmons. Alice was lovingly referred to as “Grams” by her family and extended family members for many years.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Funeral Service on Friday at 11:00 AM at New Hanover Lutheran Church, 2941 Lutheran Road, Gilbertsville, Pa., 19525, and to her Visitation on Friday morning from 9:45-10:45 AM at the Church. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Boyertown. Memorial Fund contributions in her name can be made to the New Hanover Lutheran Church at the above address.
