Joan Elizabeth Ferry, R.N., 76, formerly of Philadelphia and Drexel Hill, passed away on February 1, 2011, at Manor Care in Pottstown, Pa. Born on August 23, 1934, at her parent’s summer home in Wildwood, N.J., she was the youngest of seven children of the late Sara E. (Winring) Ferry, and the late Dr. Alfred A. Ferry, Sr., M.D.

She was a graduate of West Catholic High School for Girls in West Philadelphia, and a graduate of the Saint Agnes Hospital School of Nursing in South Philadelphia. Joan was a Registered Nurse for many years in the Philadelphia and Delaware County regions in the 1960’s and 1970’s while raising her two young sons, and later on after her sons were grown, in Southern New Jersey and then Southeast Florida, before her retirement in 2007 in South Florida. She was a very intelligent woman who loved spending time with her family and friends, and she enjoyed reading, playing scrabble and board games, doing crossword puzzles, and being a loving pet owner. Joan always felt that her greatest enjoyment in life was being able to see her sons get married, and then having God bless her with her six beloved grandchildren whom she adored and was very proud of. She will always be remembered as a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend.

Joan is survived by her children; Catherine & William Joseph Rafferty, Jr.,, of Gilbertsville, Pa., and Connie & Kevin Thomas Rafferty, of Boca Raton, Fla., her grandchildren; Erin Elizabeth Rafferty, Holly Lynn Rafferty, William Joseph Rafferty, III, Sean Edward Rafferty, Kaitlin Rose Rafferty, and Ciara Ann Rafferty, her brother; Robert Ferry, Sr., her brother-in-law, Marino DeFrancesco, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. In addition to her parents, Joan was also preceded in death by her sisters; Helen Ferry and Ruth DeFrancesco,  her brothers; Paul Ferry, Alfred A. Ferry, Jr., and David Ferry, Sr., and her loving fiance’, Zane Taber.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Joan’s Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, February 5, 2011, at 10:30 AM at Saint Andrew the Apostle R.C. Church, 3500 School Lane, Drexel Hill, Pa., 19026, with Rev. Fr. James F. Sullivan officiating, and to her Visitation on Saturday morning from 9:30-10:15 AM at the Church. Burial will follow at Saint Denis Cemetery, Havertown, Pa. Arrangements by Catagnus Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 711 N. Franklin Street, Pottstown, Pa., 19464. Memorial contributions in her name can be made the Alzheimers Disease Association of Delaware Valley, 399 Market Street, Philadelphia, Pa., 19106.
