Shirley Marie Hess (nee Hutchinson) passed away on Monday, November 26, 2018 with family present at Dock Woods in Lansdale, PA where she resided since 2015. She was 89 years old.

Shirley was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend. Everyone who met her loved her, and she is going to be terribly missed by family and friends alike. One of Shirley’s greatest legacies was the lifelong devotion of her daughters and granddaughter, especially during the final years of her life. Shirley enjoyed maintaining her home, gardening, and spending time with her family, especially her daughters and granddaughter. Shirley had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good laugh. She also enjoyed her two cups of morning coffee, beach vacations, and family outings to local gardens and holiday concerts. She was a model of decency and a tremendous source of pride to her daughters, grandchildren, and daughter-in-law. Anyone who ever had a cup of tea with her in her delightful kitchen came away with a sense of grounding as Shirley embraced the simple things in life.

Shirley was born in Berwick, PA on August 11, 1929, the second child (first daughter) of Leitha (nee Houck) and Hugh Hutchinson. Shirley attended Berwick High School and was a longtime resident of Spring City, PA where she worked for many years at Swartz’s Market and then at Uniform Tubes in Collegeville, PA. She was preceded in death by all but one of her five siblings (Joseph, Donald, Robert, and Patricia Fenstemaker). Her surviving sibling is the youngest of Leitha and Hugh’s six children, John “Jack” Hutchinson. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law, John Galie. Shirley is also survived by her two daughters, Wanda Galie and Peggy Hess; Peggy’s spouse, Donna Cubberly; her granddaughter, Darci Galie; her grandson, Glenn Galie; her niece, Amy; and her nephews, Joe, Donald, Jeff, Mike, and Robby.
